Lap Band Surgery
The revolutionary, yet simple technology behind the lap band provides a safe and effective tool to help you lose weight and keep it off. The lap band restricts the amount of food that your stomach can hold at one time—allowing you to gradually lose weight so you can live a healthier life — for your children, your family, and yourself.
Lap band surgery, also known as laparoscopic gastric banding, gastric banding or adjustable gastric banding is a restrictive surgical procedure where a band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This creates a new small stomach pouch and leaves the larger part of the stomach below the band. The food storage area in the stomach is reduced since the pouch above the band can hold only a small amount of food. The band also controls the stoma (stomach outlet) between the two parts of the stomach. The size of the stoma regulates the flow of the food from the upper to the lower part of the stomach. Ultimately, you eat much less and should feel full longer.

The key component of the lap-band procedure is its adjustability. Our surgeon adjusts the size of the opening by inflating or deflating the band via a port placed in the wall of the abdomen just beneath the skin. This adjustment process helps drive the rate of weight loss. If the band is too loose and weight loss inadequate, adding more saline can reduce the size of the stoma to further restrict the amount of food that can move through it. If the band is too tight, the surgeon will remove some saline to loosen the band and reduce the amount of restriction. The band can be removed but this surgery should be considered as a permanent procedure.
Lap band surgery is typically performed laparoscopically and has a short recovery period. It typically results in a loss of 40-60% of excess weight. Weight loss occurs more slowly than after other bariatric procedures, but because the procedure can be less invasive and can be removed if needed, it is an ideal option for many patients.
